Need advice about Michaels swollen bruised finger

Michael and Devon were playing rough with each other yesterday and Michael hurt his ring finger on his right hand somehow(I didn't see it). He complained that he hurt it and I checked it out. He could still bend it, straighten it, and make a fist, so I thought it was okay. This morning it was swollen, not real bad, but still visibly swollen. I debated taking him to the doctor, but thought I was being overprotective as usual(after all he could still move it, even though he says it hurts), so I sent him to school with a note to the teacher. This afternoon when he came home from school I notice that it's now bruised!? I'm not sure if that means it's getting worse, or what? It's still swollen to. Should I be worried that it's STILL swollen? And bruised? After school he said it only hurts when you bend it back.

He has only really hurt himself once, so I have no idea what to do.

I would probably ice it for a bit & check it out afterward. If there is no improvement or it gets worse (loss of function, Increased swelling, bruising, etc.) I'd have it checked.
