Does Obesity cause Infertility?

During the 10 years I was unable to conceive I was extremely overwieght almost 400 pounds. At present I weigh 240 pounds.

I had many friends tell me I could not get get pregnant then until I lost weight because of all the excess estrogens being converted to androgens.

Is this true? Does obesity really cause infertility? If so, how does that happen?

Yes it can. I have PCOS and that can cause weight gain. I am not all that clear on how it works but extra weight can cause your hormones to :go out of wack" . I don;;t think being overweight will cause everywomen with this problem to be infertile but it can be a very viscous cycle.

I think in my case, it may have been true because I was very overweight during those years I was TTC.

Something to think about!

Yes I've heard obesity can cause infertility.

I've heard that as well. But you see overweight women having babies all the time so it's obviously not true for every woman.

I think that is so great that you lost so much weight, Sandra. How did you do it?

I've got PCOS, too, and I know that when I'm over about 280, I don't have periods and it's very frustrating.

I've been bad and have creeped back up to 286... trying to get down to 250, but am having a hard time with it.

I was about 270 pounds when I got pregnant with Jonathan, and it didn't seem to affect us at all.

For me it did. I couldn't get pregant when I was over 300+ pounds. It was not until I was around 240 that I was able to but still I have had a history of irregular periods.

Ok....I don't think it's obesity so much as how your body copes with it. I am obese...have been all my life and I have, thank God, never had a problem getting pregnant. However I am a fairly "healthy" obese person. I don't have elevated sugar levels, sleep apnea, heart problems, metobolic problems, thyroid problems,etc........
I think the difficulty some obese people have is more metobolic, the heavier they are the slower the metabolism get which leads to slower hormone production, which messes with all your body systems. If I'm not mistaken this is one of the causes of PCOS(though I could be wrong, because I haven't looked into it too much, just going by what a few people have said.).
