Supra Ventricular Tachycardia??

I went for my yearly check up and while I was there I told my dr that I was having these episodes where my heart would feel as if it was pounding so hard that it was going to pound out my chest and it was racing to about 3 times the normal limit. I have had this happen about 3 times in teh last 6 months (first time I remember was that episode I posted about with the bleach).

He knows that this can be hard to track because it happens so infrequently.....but he sent me in for an eKG just to be safe.

He is wondering if maybe i have the beginings of Supra Ventricular Tachycardia.....I am jsut wondering exactly what is this???

Michele! Supraventricular Tachycardia is an extremely high heart rate... usually over 150 beats/min. It's electrical conductivity originates ABOVE the ventricle, therefore it is SUPRA (above) Ventricular Tachycardia.

Usually if my pt. goes into this we have them cough or bear down. If that doesn't work, or if it reoccurs, we call the MD to get orders for medication or further orders for labs, meds, MD to cardiovert, etc. Whatever the Cardiologist deems necessary for the situation.

It can be caused by a number of things: stress, digitalis toxicity, electrolyte imbalances, as well as underlying heart disease.

If you need any other information, just let me know... pm me.
Take care!

Thank you so much. I know that when I checked my heart rate one time it was around 166 that is very very high for me....when I am at the gym it doesnt ever get that high. I haven't had an episode as bad as the last time thank goodness

Yep, it's scary! It feels like your heart is going to jump out of your chest--so I've been told.

Take care & stay well!

I've been there before Michele. It was low potassium. Then at one stage my heart rate was slow and they thought I had high potassium

Mine is usually very fast (120 at rest) and sometimes I get that rush and pounding in my chest too. The first time it happened to me I was 7 months pregnant with Jessica. I get it every pregnancy and when I am stressed or haven't been eating properly.

I hope your problem is a simple one and can be treated easily

Take care
