Boys are, on average 3.5 ounces heavier than girls at birth. This may explain why women pregnant with boys eat about 10% more calories -- or about 200 more calories a day -- than women pregnant with girls, but don't gain more weight. Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health evaluated the diets of 244 American women. They speculate that male fetuses stimulate the appetites of their mothers in proportion to their caloric needs for growth. The study is published in the British Medical Journal.
