Chattanooga, TN, Sunday, July 6, 2003 - The weather and economy have been cooler than normal this year, but natural gas prices have heated up to historically high summertime levels.
"I've worked in this industry for nearly 20 years, and I don't ever remember it being like this in the summer," said Earl Burton, a former Chattanooga Gas Co. manager who recently started Tennessee Energy Consultants in Chattanooga. "In many instances, wellhead prices are twice what they were only a few years ago."
Manufacturers who rely upon natural gas to fire their boilers are trying to switch to other fuels, reduce gas consumption or pass along the higher energy costs. But in many instances, Chattanooga businesses are having to absorb the unexpectedly high gas expenses this summer.
