LAUDERDALE COUNTY Sheriff’s Maj. Ward Calhoun told MSNBC TV that the gunman entered the plant about 9:30 a.m. (10:30 a.m. ET) and shot 13 people before turning one of his weapons on himself.
Five people in addition to the gunman were dead. Ten other people were being treated at area hospitals, eight of them with gunshot wounds. The two others were being treated for undisclosed reasons.
Some of the survivors were reported to be in critical condition, and area hospitals issued an emergency call for blood.
A police bomb squad was at the plant, which is in an industrial park in Marion, on the outskirts of Meridian on the Alabama border, Meridian Mayor John Robert Smith told MSNBC TV.
NBC affiliate WLBT-TV of Jackson reported that the gunman was identified as Douglas Williams, an employee at the plant. Further details were few because several local and state police agencies were still at the scene.
Officials at the plant would not comment.
