How can I make my bathroom look bigger?

We have a SMALL .. I mean small bathroom. I am going to be re-decorating it soon and want any and all tips to make it look bigger.

Are there colors to stay away from?

I'm going to take up everything off the floor and put in one of those over the toilet cabinets .. that way I can have everything in the cabinets or under the sink. But that is about all I know so far?!

Should I have a clear shower curtain or colored one? Bright colors or light colors?

It is the kids bathroom .. so I'd like to be creative with it and not have white walls!!!

Light colors are best (white, cream, tan, yellow, lavender, etc. Nothing dark.)

Same for the shower curtain (a light one and not a dark one).

Mirrors will help. If you can put as big a mirror as you can above the sink and maybe a full length one behind the door, that will help a lot.

What is the flooring like? Once again, nothing dark. Keep it light.

Colors are important.

If I think of anything else, I will come back and post it.

Thanks Steph

We have a huge mirror above the sink. I was thinking of putting mirror tiles above the shower. There is only about an 8 inch space up there and that might help. The flooring is white with tan triangles ... very light. I REALLY want to stay away from very light colors on the walls .. it is the kids bathroom ... would bright colors (red, bright yellow) make it look smaller too??

We have a small bathroom too.

If you don't want a solid color on the walls, why not consider having a light background color with a print like florals such a ivy stenciled in.

Bright colors generally don't work in small spaces. Sticking to white and pastels is going to be the best way to open up the room. The best way to add bright colors to the walls is with a stenciled (or hand painted if you can do it) design, like bright fish or a large open plaid design around the top of the wall because it adds height.
For some reason painting the ceiling to look like the sky adds height too.

Declutter and utilize closed storage space that is already in the room. Add bins and drawers to you cabinet areas instead of counter tops.

Any large piece of furniture that juts into the room can obstruct vision and make space appear smaller too.

I guess I'm going to stick to white walls and something handpainted around the top. Now sure what "theme" we are going with yet. But I like the underwater theme .. and then you glue the bottom of a "body" (doll or barbie) to the ceiling (like a person swimming!!

Who knows what I'll get around to doing. Thanks for the tips ladies!

I can't remember?

I also want to put a fishing hook with a fish on it hanging down. But I'm just not sure I want to go with the underwater theme yet!

I've got to finish the hallway first!

I'm sure whatever you do will turn out great, Rox!

My front bathroom is small, too and these are some great tips! Thanks!

It would be great if you could post some pics of the bathroom you want to redo. It will give us an actual picture to work with, kwim? It's just an idea. If you want color on the walls, however, I would probably go with pastel yellow or something like that. Bright and dark colors do seems to make a room appear smaller.

I'll try to get a picture ... but the room is so small that I can't get a good one!
