State Agriculture Commissioner Nathan L. Rudgers announced that uneviscerated processed Kouta and Pipe (or Circle) fish have been voluntarily recalled by Targee West African Food Supply Inc., 523 Targee St., Staten Island, New York, 10304. The product may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum spores, which can cause Botulism, a serious and potentially fatal food-borne illness.
Both Kouta and Pipe (Circle) fish are sold individually from bulk displays and are 0.5 to 1.5 pounds in size. Both types of fish were sold in the Staten Island, New York area.
The sale of uneviscerated fish is prohibited under New York State Agriculture and Markets regulations because Clostridium botulinum spores are more likely to be concentrated in the viscera than any other portion of the fish. Uneviscerated processed fish has been linked to outbreaks of botulism poisoning. Symptoms of botulism include blurred or double vision, general weakness, poor reflexes, difficulty swallowing, and respiratory paralysis.
The product was discovered during a routine inspection of Targee West African Food Supply Inc. by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets food inspectors.
No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with these products.
Consumers who have purchased these products should return them to the place of purchase or discard them.
