Blinds vs. Curtains

Our apartment has curtains. As the people move out here, they are redecorating and replacing the curtains with blinds.

What is a good way to do the work on replacing the hardware associated with this switch? I'd like to talk to the management about doing it ourselves (and maybe getting some $$$ off on rent), and want to show that I/we could do it ourselves. (I would much prefer blinds to curtains.)

Also I'd like to talk to them about donating the "old" curtains to people currently using blankets etc. to cover their windows. They've got a program here in FW called "Cow Town Brush-up" that goes around and paints homes for elderly or low-income people. They could probably help with distribution and getting home improvement places to donate hardware...

Any ideas?

You can discuss it with them, though I doubt they would knock off a portion of the rent continuously thoughout the term of your lease. Blinds run between $3.85 to $14.00 depending where you buy them.

It our last apartment I had to buy the blinds for one of the rooms they did not provide some with, believe me I took them with me when we moved.

Good luck!

They are really easy to hang .. you can do it! But I'd see if their maintence people could do it that way you would not be responsable for hte holes in the walls that the screws put in!

Great idea about donating the curtains

Re: Blinds vs. Curtains

We have all blinds in our house no curtains at all. It cuts down on dust for my allergies.

Re: Blinds vs. Curtains

Let us know what they tell you when you talk to them about it. I would just ask if you could get your windows converted now, rather than them waiting for you to move out.

Re: Blinds vs. Curtains

Can't hurt to ask! The worst they can do is say no.
