As the parent of a preschooler, this is probably the first 'true' Halloween your child will remember. You'll want to make it memorable by creating a fun, yet safe, costume for him to wear. Don't panic if you're not crafty; fun doesn't have to mean complicated.
Here are some easy costumes you can make at home:
Angel: A simple white sheet can be the robe. Cut the wings out of cardboard.
Skeleton: Cut out 'bones' using white felt. Glue them to a black t-shirt or turtleneck and cotton pants or leggings. Glow-in-the-dark paint can brighten up the outfit.
Butterfly: Cut wings out of cardboard, paint bright colors. Make antennae out of a headband.
Witch: Make a wig of stringy black hair out of yarn. Roll a newspaper into a cone and paint black. An old bathrobe can serve as a robe.
Cowboy: Most preschoolers have the essentials already in their toy box. You'll need a cowboy hat, a plaid shirt, jeans and boots.
Rock star: A funky wig and a mismatched outfit make this costume a snap.
Lego: Glue plastic cups on a cardboard box that's close in size to your child's shoulder width. Paint a primary color. Finish the costume with a matching baseball cap.
Clown: Pom poms on a t-shirt or sweatsuit make an easy costume. Add a clown nose and a colorfully painted face.
Doctor and nurse: A white oxford makes an ideal doctor's coat. A nurse's hat can be made out of white poster board.
Flower: Using several pieces of colorful crepe or tissue paper, make a flower headdress that can tie around your child's neck. Wear a colorful sweatsuit.
