Scarecrow real or not?

Try dressing up a scarecrow and have it up a few days
prior to Halloween so the whole neighborhood gets used to
seeing him as a fixture. Then substitute a real person dressed
as a scarecrow Halloween night!

That is a great idea! One of our neighbors had "one" sitting next to pine straw with candy on the top of the pinestraw and as kids would come up, the "scarecrow" would leap out of the chair. Scared the crap out of them!
