My own Thanksgiving - Help me make it special!

Yikes I just found out last night that I am cooking my own Thanksgiving dinner.
We were suposed to drive to my mom's house tonight but she called yesterday and let me know that her father in law died and she and my stepdad are driving to West Virginia.
I've never done this before and I am a little bummed about not having anyone to celebrate with but I want to make the best of it and make sure it is a special day for my family.
I need ideas on what I can do not just with cooking but throughout the day to make it special.

Have Haley help out in the kitchen .. you know doing the little things. Make place settings for each member of the family out of pic cones .. just slip a piece of paper into the cone to make who sits where. Eat with candles burning too. After dinner everybody do something together .. watch the parade, play a game, etc.

Have fun and enjoy your family!!

Give everyone a "special" job to do so they are all included in making the day special. Even if it's just having the kids color pictures to "decorate" the house with.

One of my best memories is being "trusted" to set the table with the good china on the holidays. And mom also used to let me help mash the potatoes with an old fashioned potato masher. And Keenan always got to help with the gravy. We all had a particular chore to do.

It is usally just us every year and I don;t really do too much that is special. I may let Samantha help in the kitchen and of course we will go bowling in the evening.

We play pool and steve's going to play his keyboard with Kate. We usually have a games night since we don't like football and we dont' get any tv stations anyway. Where are they going in West Virginia?

You might have everyone dress up for the meal. That always makes it just a little more special in my opinion. Also take the chance to take pictures of everything! I always have the kids help out in the kitchen. Even Maddie can help with dumping and pouring with assistance.

For the grown ups serve wine if you drink. We do not usually have wine with meals and so it seems special to me to have wine with Thanksgiving.
