My MIL

Okay, my MIL and I are not close but we do get along and I try to make every effort to make her feel welcome in my home and to help her feel comfortable around my kids.

Yesterday Billy and the kids took her out to lunch and they stopped at Target so she could buy something they had on sale. While they were there, she told Billy she'd love to buy Elizabeth some clothes but that she knows I don't like the clothes she buys our kids because she never sees them in them, so she wasn't going to buy Elizabeth any.

What the? I ALWAYS make a point to dress the kids in clothes that someone bought them whenever I know we are going to see them. ALWAYS. My MIL has bought Elizabeth two outfits since she was born and I've made sure she wore them when we've visited. And the clothes she's bought Alexander since he was born I've done the same with.

I guess she just doesn't remember what the clothes she bought them look like. Next time, I'm gonna point out to her that "this is the outfit YOU bought them" so she'll know.

By the way, yesterday she came to our house before they went out and she helped Billy get the kids ready. He didn't put them in the clothes that she had bought them so why isn't she upset about that? Why didn't she ask him where the clothes she had bought them were so they could wear them?

Just anything to find fault with the DIL I guess.

Sometimes there is just no pleasing them. DOn;t worry about it. LIke you said just point out to her when they have something she gave them on.

There is no pleasing this woman. Oh well. Can't make everyone happy I guess.

Sorry Lisa, I do have the same Philosophy though and have my kids wear the clothes that the visitor had purchased. Not your fault they have bad memory. Is it tacky to point that out, because I do!

I don't think it's tacky and will be what I do with her from now on. Usually people recognize what they've bought and will comment on how cute it looks on them. But not her. I guess I should have taken her not saying anything about their outfits as her not remembering that she bought them. But I know what I must do now!!

You got it! Anything to piss off the DIL!

So it's your fault she can't remember what she bought? Gotta love how they can always turn it around!

I'm sure if I asked she would say she remembers what she bought them and would swear she's never seen them wear anything she's bought them. But I know the truth.

I just talked to a friend and told her what my MIL said. She (my friend) said she couldn't believe she said that because I always make sure the kids wear what others gave them. She agreed that maybe my MIL just doesn't remember what clothes she gave what grandchild. At least others recognize that I make an effort to have the kids wear clothes they give them!!

That's a petty thing for her to say. Who cares what clothes the children wear? And I think you are a very good DIL for even thinking of dressing them in the clothes MIL bought. Don't worry about it too much. Fault will be found no matter what you do so just let it go for now. I like the saying "killing them with kindness" 'cause it really works.

LuAnn, my MIL is one of those people. Her own daughter actually got her a book on learning to be happy with yourself and your life. My MIL is always complaining about something. I hate going out to eat with her because she always has something to say about the food or the table or the waiter or something, and I've only been shopping once with her but will never go again.

So I guess her comment shouldn't have surprised or bothered me, but it did.
