sign language
Dear Gbeth: Thank you for your question. I am sure that you have done a lot of singing, talking, and reading to Samuel David. At around 6 -9 months, experts believe that children actually begin to understand what words mean. Until this point, children listen and learn how words flow, where words begin and end, and the difference between sounds. I have heard many experts as well as parents debate the topic of teaching a young child how to sign. In my opinion, any activity in which a parent and child are actively involve is valuable. I also feel that, many times, by using gestures as you talk, "signs" are a natural part of baby talk. For example, shaking your head for yes and no, waving, bending your legs when you want to sit, putting your hands up to be picked up. The most important thing is to always use words when you use a sign. Best wishes to you and Samuel David. Dorothy
