Recess

Does your child have recess? When and how long?

The reason I am asking is that there is a mom I know who has a daughter in first grade...her teacher keeps the kids in all the time because they do not have time for recess with all the school work. I think kids NEED recess!

There is no set recess time at Haley's school. They go out every few days when there is time.
Not even when she was in Kindergarten did they go out regularly.

It was kind of a shock to me at first because I remember being in school and having 2 set recesses a day up through 3rd grade and then once a day after lunch in 4th and 5th.

I think that the new "no child left behind" act and all of the required benchmarks have teachers scrambling to find time to teach everything that kids are required to know and it leaves litte time for kids to just be kids.

Haley also only attends music, art, and PE once a week.

Wow! I think recess is one of the most important parts of the day. Kids learn all sorts of socialization skills and how to interact with one another..form relationships etc. I wonder what it will be like when Gavin is in school?

I know when I worked at school the 1st graders had 30 minutes after lunch and then another 15 min. in the afternoon.

The boys go outside for recess everyday unless it is below zero outside, plus PE is every other day.

WOW!! First grade and no recess. They must run all over the place when they get home. As a teacher I don't know what I would do without recess. I taught 1st grade for a couple years...They should have recess! My Opinion of course. But they need a break to run and relax. I would talk to the principle about it...1st graders should not be worked to the bone. Children learn how to use their imaginations and how to be social beings thru recess. I think that it is very important to have some time for them to relax also.

Cori has 2 set recesses a day. There is one before lunch and one in the afternoon. I know that the second one is for 20 minutes but I cannot recall how long the first one is. When it is too cold or raining outside, they get with the class next door and play games or have free time but they do always have it. I am glad because I do feel it is very important.
She also has gym 3 times a week.

Ali school at the elementary cut recess a lot. She did not have it in 3rd grade at all. Because her Gifted classes got in the way or Art class. Sometimes even band when she was doing that. Recess does not seem to be as important as it use to be, yet they all complain that children are overweight and the parents are doing nothing about it, well the schools are not either. Recess cut and food they serve is all carbs, most of it.

Ethan has a 20 minute recess everyday. They get 25 min. for lunch and a P.E. class everyday for 1 hour. I think kids really need that time to play and just be kids! It is amazing all they have to learn now days!!!

I think little kids (up to 6th grade) need recess it gives them a chance to vent off all the pent up energy they have from just sitting around all day.

I know this is a fairly old thread but it amazes me the relevance to a new trend in our kids recess.

It's hard to discount the fact that a healthy lifestyle is something that a person should develop at a young age. It’s important for kids to play outdoors on a daily basis to improve physical development. In the last two decades, school recess has decreased causing more kids to have fewer physical activities at school.

It's definitely noteworthy that this is why Dannon® Danimals® created “Rally for Recess”!

“Rally for Recess” is designed to create healthy competition, pitting school against school! Five schools have the opportunity to win new playground equipment and an all-day recess celebration. Danimals is committed to childhood health and wellness, which starts with good nutrition and an active lifestyle. Through February 8, 2012 purchasers can find codes on Danimals packaging to enter and register. The top five schools in each of the categories with the most codes registered wins!

We recently started this campaign at the social media marketing company I work for, Check out the website for Rally For Recess here:

my son has a fifteen minute recess in the morning, 25 minutes during lunch to go outside as well as every day the entire school has DPA  daily physcial activity, they get up and move sometime during the afternoon,  this is on top of three times a week gym time.

we missed recess for the first month of the year because of a labour dispute, but they have it back again thank goodness.
