Questions regarding milk supply

Hello,

Hopefully someone will be able to answer some of my questions or give me some ideas of what else to try. My daughter is 5 weeks old and I've been trying to breastfeed. My daughter didn't catch onto nursing while I was in the hospital. I began supplementing her with formula -finger feeding within 2 days of her birth. She did catch on within a week or week and a half but the problem is now my milk supply is not there.

Since being released from the hospital I have been nursing her while using the Medela S and S. Which is a container with formula that hangs around my neck. There are tubes that come down so that she gets both breastmilk and formula at each feed. After feeding her I then pump. At night I feed her with an Advent bottle and pump. When I pump I am only able to pump an 1 oz. But my daughter is now drinking about 3.5 to 4 oz. When I do try to feed her without the S and S she falls asleep within minutes, Becasue my milk supply is so low she ends up falling asleep trying to get enough.

I was prescribed domparidome to increase my milk supply about 4 weeks ago. I am also taking fenugreek and blessed thistle. My milk supply has increased the last 2 weeks but not enough. Any ideas? I really want to be able to breastfeed. But I am starting to think that I might be fighting a losing battle and that maybe I should just give up. I have spoke to lactation nurses and I haven't been able to get any other advice.

Help!

Lorna

Hi Lorna!
I am so sorry that you are having such problem getting your milk supply up. That has got to be frusterating. I don't have any experience with differant meds to get your supply up, but i do know that the more you nurse your baby the more milk you will build up.
Our breastfeeding expert here on the boards has her own website : www.breastfeedingbasics.com that you may be able to find some info that would be helpful. Also, Anne has her own board here to help with the hard questions and problems. You could try posting something to her there as well. It does take Anne a few days to repond usually, just so you don't think she is ignoring you or something. She is a busy gal with 6 kids!LOL! Who wouldn't be!
I hope that i was of some help to you. If you have any other questions or problems please feel free to email me here or post them. I would also love to see you at the breastfeeding moms chat tomorrow if you are available. It is at 1pm EST. Hope to see you there! And good luck, it sounds like you are doing the best that you can with the resources that you have. Hang in there!
