Car seat.. for small preschooler... help

Okay, Ladies I need your help.

So far we have had two car seats since Michael was born. One for when he was a preemie/infant and then when he was 2 years old we purchased a forward facing toddler car seat with a full harness and a overhead sheild for toddlers 22-30 pounds.
It had was equipped a tether strap attached to the top of the seat. This tether essentially hooks into a bolt in the car, adding even more stability and reducing head movement in the event of a crash.


Now Michael is 4 years old and is getting too tall for this car seat but he weighs 30 pounds.
He is too young and small for a booster seat and I am not sure what is the next step in car seats is for a 4 year old who only wieghs 30 pounds and is about 38 inches tall.

Also I wanted to now if I still needed to look for a car seat with a shield since Michael is still on the small side for a 4 year old.

The car seat I use is the booster type, but with the belts on it (am I explaining this right?) It's the toddler seat without the shield, that you can remove the 5-point harness belts from and use a standard shoulder harness. Joey is 4 1/2, and weighs 35 pounds - still too light for the shoulder harness - and is 39 inches tall - nearly too tall for the 5-point harness.

I'm going to ask the pediatrician about it, I think. If you do, let me know what you find out.

I think Judy is talking about something like this

I've used something similar on each kid, and it lasts them from the time they are 30 pounds until they are too large for a booster anymore. Too bad you don't live closer ... I've got an extra I'm getting ready to sell.

Let me know what you want for it Dawn!! We are in the market now that Zach will be turning3 and is outgrowing his toddler seat.


I love the highback boosters that have the seatbelt adjusters.

Gavin used one of those as well and Maddie is getting ready to move into one. His weight should be fine since Gavin has been in his since he was 2.

we have teh same sort of carseat as Dawn. They are great....Liz is going to be a tall but skinny kid (is only 31 lbs and is almost 3) so it will be awhile before we can use the booster seat part.....but at least we know she will not outgrow the carset part
