My 7 yr old daughter is driving me crazy. She constantly is clearing her throat. She can't even get a sentence out without having to clear her throat at least once.
She says "it feels like something is stuck in my throat". I understand that, I have to clear my throat ocasionally, but she does it ALL DAY! Telling her to quit doesn't help and I'm not going to punish her for it but it is literally driving me nuts. People are constantly asking her and me what it is all about. I don't know.
This has been going on for 3 or 4 months now.

My friend Diane had a throat clearing issue - she actually has damaged ger vocal cords and is raspy all the time - you may want to ask the dr just in case

Dear Elaine, throat clearing is a very common 'tic' (a behavior that a person does involuntarily) that is sometimes seen in children. Usually it is a phase that a child will go through, but sometimes it can stick around for a long time. Since it's been going on for quite a while, I'd suggest that you speak to her pediatrician about it and consider seeing a neurologist as well, as tics are neurological in etiology. It may be nothing, but if she really can't help it (which is likely) then it doesn't help to become frustrated with her and it is also likely to be very frustrating to her, especially if other people are noticing it. Sometimes, if tics are especially disruptive to a child and they don't go away, medication is in order and can be very effective--this is where the neurologist comes in--I would not suggest allowing your pediatrician to administer this type of meds, should it be necessary, and most won't anyway. Hope this helps, take care,
