Help! Need to know about berries!

O.K. I have pureeing everything I can think of that is safe for the babies into mush for them and so far they love it. They don't even want babyfood at this point, and we are moving towards more solid tablefoods although they have a long way to go. Here is my question:

I have mixed berry applesauce and wanted to mix it in cream of wheat the way I have been with other fruits. However I have heard the seeds of strawberries, raspberries are a no no. Why? Please help I am making this food for tomorrow and need to know right away thanks!

Some kids are alergic to some berries. I don't know about seed specifics - I have just heard that strawberries can casue allergic reactions and you should wait until they are older before feeding them to young children.

Strawberries and kiwis are the biggest allergy risk. Raspberries, I've never heard of them being a problem?? I gave both my girl's stuff with raspberries in it when they were babies. But I know that strawberries are a definitey no-no.

I have never heard that about strawberries. Kate's been eating them for about a month with no problems, but she is a little older.

Here's an article I found out about berries - http://www.beechnut.com/Caring%20For..._allergies.asp

It sounds like you are okay with all of them as long as they are cooked.

Here's another one from Berkely University on homemade baby foods - http://parents.berkeley.edu/advice/eating/baby.html

Not all children have food allergies. For example, Kate's been eating white fishes for quite awhile and has had no allergic reactions.

THANKS!

Thanks so much for all the great advice. I took a chance and mixed in the mixed berry applesauce with the cream of wheat since it had cooked berries in it obviously and my mom says they almost ate the spoon! I am always so worried that I am going to give them something that is a no no but I want variety too!

Ooohhh I didn't think about giving babies cream of wheat. I personally love the stuff and have been trying to come up with more things with texture to feed to Chloe.

I've only heard that you should avoid strawberries for the first year because of the risk of allergies. Chloe has already had them though in her strawberry/banana/apple sauce.

Then why do they put strawberries in babyfood? Both my kids had every kind of berry you can eat, in some form or other, by the time they were one. Alexander could eat strawberries all day long and be happy (that's why we now have our own strawberry patch). Neither of my kids had a reaction to anything except tomatoes. Now they can both eat those without a problem.

Any food is a risk, you just have to watch to make sure they don't have a reaction when they first try something new. I'm glad your babies loved the berries!!
