What do think of naming children after states?

Tim's (Dh) step sister has several children named after states in the U.S.
She has a daughter named Dakota, a son named Wyoming and a new baby named Virginia.

I think Dakota and Virginia were cute for her girls but I don't know about Wyoming for her son.

What is up with Wyoming??!!

I love and am all for states (now countries are another thing)as names... IF it sounds good.
My grammas name was Virginia and it's a name that makes me happy.

Thank god for my parents.......Mykayla was almost Daykota.......mom said it sounded like a stripper.... Honestly tho, i dont see a problem with it...unless you're naming your kid IDAHO

i dont know about states but i love names like Paris, Italy etc
post #5 of 29
Not my thing at all...

I guess it depends, I like Dakota and Virginia, but naming your kid Vermont would be totally weird.

I knew a girl named Tennessee when I was in school. I always kind of saw Dakota as a boy's name, though.

Well, then you have the city names, too... Like Dallas.

I'm all for state names like Dakota, Virginia, possibly Georgia. Now, you go naming your kid Ohio or Wisconsin and I'm going to think you have serious issues.

Hey Now.. we were planning another baby and naming him/her OHIO. LOL just kiddin'..

I'm not really sure. I don't like names of States.. But cities isn't bad (Austin LOL)

BUt I agree.. naming a kid Arkansas is kinda funny.. LOL

I think it's weird if you name all your kids after states, but I don't think some of the names are so bad individually. I love the name Georgia and don't think of the state when I hear it as a person's name. My dd's name is also the name of several cities, but I've never associated her name with those places. I just like the name.

I love Georgia too...

And Elaine I think there is NOTHING wrong with Wisconsin!

I think Wyoming is different, by chance do they travel alot and maybe were concieved there?

I did got to school with two girls that were sisters and their names were September and Promise.

September and Promise are nothing Jan!

I knew a set of sisters named Secret and Treasure.

Then I knew a girl named Sunshine (Sunny for short)

and a nother set of sisters named Winter, Summer, and Autumn.

Yeah I think Idaho is the worst!

Do you think they get asked alot about that?

I like Virginia but I wasn't to excited about Dakota and I don't know what Tim's step sister was thinking with naming her son Wyoming.... but she's their mom, I can't argue there.

I personally would not name my baby after a state, trendy or not. Viriginia and Carolina though are okay by me.

i knew a kid named Digby

Hmm, I like city names better than state names. I knew a girl named Texas. My great aunt's middle name was Arizona. Another girl I know named her daughter Kansas.

Digby? Oh that poor child!

I like Carolina or Caroline..we actually discussed using it for Abby!

I do think Idaho is a bit much.....what about Rhode Island for a name?

Hey believe it or not...there is this really great children's book called My Great Aunt Arizona It's a reall good book and I have a copy of it! I used it when I was teaching!

I wanted to use the names Kohlorado (Colorado) Lexington (KY)
and Kentucky Timber if I ever had twins, but dh said that it isn't going to happen.

I also like Paris, Italy, Virginia is ok, as is Georgia, Tennessee was ok for the writer (or was it the singer?) I wouldn't use Illinois or Ohio. Arizona is a good one too.

IDAHO!!! That would be TOO CRUEL!!

No kidding, my dh wanted to name Kimberly Kansas!! It took a while to talk him out of that one!!

I couldn't name a child Dakota for two reasons. First, my aunt had a dog named that. Second, my mom drives a Dakota truck. It would simply make my brain hurt to say, "Let's take Dakota (the kid) and Dakota (the dog) to the beach in mom's Dakota (the truck)."

When we were picking baby names, we decided that any name that could be found as a noun or place name in a dictionary was pretty much out of the question. In high school, I knew a girl named Chastity. I just think that's too much pressure, KWIM??

Kinda like the girl I went to High School and her name was Angel Lovings! Now why did her parents do that????

When I was in the Annex (both times) my kids names were so 'normal' that they were almost weird, if you can understand that

We had girl named Zanska (named after the village that Sir Edmond Hillary climbed Mt Everest from ) a boy called Stormy, andother boy called Lightning (Say WHAT!!!!!!!!) and one boy was named after a car but I can't remember which one Oh yeah and girl called Destiny (and this is years before Destiny's Child could have had an impact - we are going back between 12.5 and 18.5 years here)

This is a BAD trend! Wyoming for a boy is awful.

I knew a girl named Autumn, and one named Sunday and one named Sunshine.
Also knew sisters,
Ginger, Cinnamon, and Spice, there was another but I can't remember which spice she was named after.

Wyoming is bad.. but at least no one named their kid Utah, or New York...

Well, my mom's name is Rosemarie, which is quite similar to Rosemary. One of DH's friends has a son named Sage. What that child will go through in school makes me shudder. Scarier yet, I'm sure somewhere out there, there's four siblings named Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme.
