What's the difference?

My GYN has scheduled bloodwork for both Glucose fasting and Insuling fasting. What is the difference between the two? I was at the lab today and I thought it was one test but the technician said it was two different tests. I thought glucose and insulin was just about one in the same. Goes to show, you learn something new everyday

Thanks,

Kimmie

If you are not diabetic...then they are checking to see if you need insulin. I guess you already knew that. But that was what I got out of DH. He also said that if your glucose level is down then they will probably put you on insulin and then probably you will get pregnant.

Ok... let me take a stab at it. I'm pretty brain-dead from work right now, but I can research it more for you tomorrow.

Fasting glucose: it is the blood sugar level in your bloodstream when you have NOT eaten.

Insulin fasting: Not as familiar with. From what I've just read (skimmed over) it seems as if this test assesses how your body uses it's insulin and if you may be insulin resistant or not.

Remind me tomorrow to take a better look at insulin fasting for you.

When I looked up both tests on the internet today, I was suprised to see that one of the 1st things listed was Polysystic Ovarian Syndrome or (PCOS). The symptoms from this, I have. Though they have no cure for this yet, medications given enable for a pregnancy and normal cycles again. Diabetes runs in my family, both my father and grandmother had the adult onset and had to take insulin. My dad was worse off because he had to take his insulin daily. We thought it skipped my generation. Hopefully these test results will be negative for this, but the odds are and with my symptoms, I have high doubts now after reading up on this.

These tests are for my sugar and insulin levels, too much insulin causing irregular cycles and also not so great ovulations.

I have my fingers crossed that June 14th will hold good news and not bad. Thanks for the responses..
