Just a little worried here...

My almost 4 year old daughter has a really strange habit and I wonder if it could be a signal of trouble. Here goes... Since she was about 2 she has been putting herself to sleep by masturbating. Is this normal? She stopped doing it for a long time and then today she was having a hard time going to sleep for her nap so she reverted back to this behavior. I haven't discouraged it just let her know that it is something that needs to be done in private but honestly I want to scream "Isn't she too young?" Any advice or help would be really appreciated. Thanks

I think it is normal. I heard a lot of children masterbate and explore themselves in this way. I used to babysit for different little boys who did it. I've never seen a little girl do it, but I have not cared for many little girls other than my own daughter and she is very young.

Does anyone else have a view on this or is this just really wierd? Too wierd? I have talked to my daughters ped and she agreed that this is normal but really? at 4? She started doing this at 1 and a half maybe she was almost 2.

I think it's strange, but that doesn't mean it's not normal. AS long as the DR is ok with it then I guess. I would think it's a habit she might break as she gets older, or maybe not if she likes it that much????

my niece is like your daughter... as long as it is done in private there shouldn't be a problem with it.
she is three now and she has been visiting for three weeks and i haven't seen her 'riding' anything this visit

Hi Chris,
you really shouldn't worry at all. Her behavior is completely normal as well as age appropriate--we should all be so lucky to be able to fall asleep this way

Thank you, thank you Dr. Bartell. I can rest easy with the opinion of 2 drs that are the same. I have had people tell me that this is a sign of molestation and other not so nice things so you can imagine what has been going through my head. Thanks for setting my worries and fears at ease.
