too much too fast!!

With my last baby I had too much milk, if there is such a thing. There was so much pressure behind it. My daughter was gulping down the milk and I think it was because the milk was so fast. She was 3 days old and drowned on the milk. She stopped breathing and went floppy. I revived her but didn't want to hold incase she died on me. About a day later I resumed my duties because my dh was bloody hopeless.
I am worried about the same thing happening. I don't have a problem with bf just that is too fast. What can I do?

Although many women struggle with the problem of not producing enough milk (especially when they return to work), having too much milk can also cause problems, especially when accompanied by an overactive let-down reflex.

Some women only produce drops of milk no matter how much they nurse or pump (this is rare, but it does happen) while others make enough milk to feed several babies. Fortunately, most nursing mothers fall somewhere in the middle, making enough milk for their baby's needs, but not a whole lot more.

There is an article on my website that I think you will find helpful. It's called "Oversupply: Too Much Milk" and it has details about how to handle this problem.

By the way, I have been working with nursing mothers for nearly 25 years now, and I have never known of a case where a baby choked to death on his mother's milk. They may gag, cough , and even stop breathing for a few seconds, but I don't think you need to worry about her actually 'drowning' due to the forceful spray of milk.

The article will provide you with practical suggestions on how to handle the strong let-down, as well as how to reduce the milk supply so that you have enough milk but not too much.

Good luck!
