I'm no specialist but I have heard that MEDELA is the best brand to buy. It is a little more expensive, but every breast feeding mom I know has suggested it. Good luck.

Best Pumps?

Hi Anita,
Medela is the number one breast pump company in the world, and their products are the most popular with mothers.
There are tons of breast pumps on the market in a wide range of prices, and some of them are really crappy. Unfortunately, they are all packaged attractively, and claim to be effective. It is hard for new moms to know which one to choose.
Medela makes many different types of pumps, and while they are all good, some are much better than others.
All of their pumps are designed to release suction automatically, so that it is almost impossible to hurt yourself with them. All of their electric pumps have an autocycling feature, which means that they suction and cycle automatically. Most of the other electric pumps on the market don't have this feature, which means that you have to put your finger on a hole or a button and release it to stop the suction. This means that it is very hard to regulate the suction, and it is often uncomfortable or even painful to use them. I've seen mothers with bruised and damaged nipple tissue from using these types of pumps.
The kind of pump you need really depends on how you are going to be using it. If you are a stay-at-home mom who just wants a pump to use occasionally, then pumps like the MiniElectric, the DoubleDeluxe, or the DoubleEase might work out well. For mothers who are working and pumping regularly several days a week, I recommend one of the Pump In Style models. These are designed for frequent or long-term use, and are the most effective at maintaining milk supply over a period of time. They do cost more than the other pumps, but are a really good investment in terms of effectiveness, motor life, speed, and efficiency.
When you consider the number of mothers like you who spend money on pumps that don't work well, then investing in a good pump from the beginning makes even more sense.
If you want to find out more about the different types of pumps that are available and the pros and cons of each type, see the article "Collecting and Storing Breastmilk" on my site, and check out the product information to see pictures, prices, and detailed descriptions of each type.
I hope this information is helpful.
