How in the world do you get your baby to drink out of a sippy cup? I'm having the hardest time trying to get Dominick too he doesn't understand that he has too suck.
I bought him a cup with handles today so maybe that will help.

I think it just something they have to figure out on their own. Just give it to him periodically and let him chew, suck or whatever on the end of it.

It takes a while ... I think mine were closer to a year before they got the hang of it. I'd do what Wendy suggested, but put water in it! Those spill proof cups really aren't! LOL

I think I ended up starting with the ones that more closely resembled the shape of a bottle. But it's been so long, I couldn't even tell you anymore!

I started mine around 6 months. At first they would chew on it and play with it, and then they got the hang of it(didn't take more than a week or two for mine, but all babies are different). I read it helps to offer juice in the cup. The sweetness encourages them to drink it(I would dilute it though because even natural sugar is not really good for you).

They make some with softer sippie thingies. You may want to check those out.

WOW, I am glad this question was brought up... Emily is 8 mos old and has basically never used a bottle. (used one yesterday for the first time since she was about 2 mos old) We went to a baseball game and she stayed with her godmother)... anyway, she has never held a bottle either... my friend suggested that i start to use a sippy cup... my dd looks at it like it is just something to throw off the highchair and watch mommy pick it up. I put it towards her mouth and she turns her head. Did I do something wrong by not giving my dd a bottle??? Is she ever going to get this holding her own cup thing?? I tried apple juice (diluted) and she wanted ntohing to do with it...i ever tried breastmilk and again same response....I need to get over this hurdle along with the finger food one...

I bought the avent 1st starter cup. It has a soft sipper like the bottles, so it was easier for him to figure out. He doesn't like the cups that have the hard tops, even though he does great on the other one. It took about 2 weeks, I guess for him to really get the hang of it. Now he will drink juice out of it but not formula. Just keep trying. Maybe try taking the thing that keeps it from leaking so some liquid flows into his mouth easier.

Kimmie you might try a cup with a straw..my 11 month old can use one or just a regular cup so she knows there is something good in that cup! Abby does not use bottles either.

If you use a sippy cup and they have the plastic thingys (don't know what to call them LOL) that make it so they don't leak...take those out for the first time or two so they do not have to suck just put it to their mouth so they know that something comes out. Did that make sense?

Walmart has these great cups that are like $.97 and the lid is mostly a rubby nipple looking thing and we have had a lot of succes with those.

Yep, just keep giving them the cup with their meals and eventually they will get the hang of it. My kids figured out quick how to drink out of them and by 10-11 months that's all they were using. Some kids figure out the straw sippy cups faster so you could always try one of those. Good luck!
