Thursday Recall Roundup: June 19-26, 2008
This week’s recalls include Charm key chains, tire swings, girls’ sandals, Jardine cribs, Stanley cribs, Coolibar children’s jackets and hoodies, and Westminster remote controlled helicopters. Read on for details…


1. Wal-Mart has issued a recall of “Hip Charm” Key Chains, citing high levels of lead. They can be toxic if chewed on or swallowed, especially by children.
The key chains (and charms) were sold at Wal-Mart from April 2005 through June 2008, and cost anywhere from $.50 to $6.00. If you own this item, you can return it to Wal-Mart for a full refund. 2. Miracle Recreation Equipment Company has issued a recall of its Playground Tire Swings, due to risk of the hanger clamp failing, causing the swing to detach and fall. There have been reports of injuries including cuts which required stitches and at least one fractured foot.
The swing was sold from February 1995 through March 2008 by various vendors to various customers, including schools, parks, and recreation centers. It cost between $570 and $2,100. The company has sent direct mail notices to its customers advising that the swing and chains be removed until the hanger clamp can be repaired (free repair kits are being issued). 3. Nordstrom’s issued a recall of Meyeworld’s Cadence-Lea and Trio-Lea girls’ sandals, citing a potential choking hazard caused by the flower petal attachment. The Cadence-Lea sandals are white, light green, or silver, and the Trio-Lea sandals are white or silver.
The sandals were sold in girls’ sizes 5 through 12 at Nordstrom’s from March 2008 through May 2008; they sold for about $30. If you own these sandals, you’re advised to take them away from children immediately and return them to Nordstrom’s for a full refund. 4. Jardine Enterprises has issued a recall of its cribs, stating that the wooden slats can break, creating a gap and causing a fall and/or choking hazard to infants. A chart showing which cribs are being recalled can be seen at this U.S. CPSC page.
These cribs were sold at KidsWorld, Geoffrey Stores, Toys R Us, and Babies R Us from January 2002 through May 2008. They were sold for between $150 to $300. If you own this crib, you’re advised to stop using it immediately and contact Jardine for a full refund. 5. Stanley Furniture Company has issued a recall of their 2nd Nature Built to Grow Cribs, because the space between the mattress and the crib can be too wide, posing an entrapment hazard for infants.
These cribs were sold at retailers across the U.S. from March 2006 through December 2007, and were sold for about $1,100. Customers are asked to stop using it immediately in the middle setting, and instead adjust it to the high or low setting. Customers are also eligible for a free replacement headboard. 6. Coolibar Inc has issued a recall of their Children’s Sun Block Jackets and Hoodies, citing a strangulation hazard caused by the drawstrings.
The jackets and hoodies were sold in the Coolibar’s catalog and on the Coolibar’s website from March 2005 through April 2008 (hoodies) and from February 2008 through April 2008 (jackets). They were sold for between $25 and $40. If you own one of these products, you’re advised to remove the drawstring immediately, or return the item for a full refund. 7. Westminster Inc has issued a recall of their Thunder Wolf Remote Controlled Helicopters, citing that the rechargeable battery can overheat, causing the body of the helicopter to melt and posing a burn hazard. (Units marked “Made in China” on the underside are not subject to the recall).
The toys were sold retail stores nationwide from June 2007 through December 2007 for about $20. Customers are advised to stop playing with the helicopter and contact Westminster for a refund (retailers will not provide a refund).
