I don't know the whole story or what his job in combat was. There are a lot of desk jobs out there in the war zones. More than people realize. My job was a combat profession and I did almost no walking or standing on the job. If he was a scope dope (similiar to an air traffic controller), he would not have left his chair except for breaks all day. Also, there is walking on sand or dirt and walking on concrete and asphalt. I think walking on concrete all day is a lot more jarring than walking on sand or dirt. So before, I jump down the throat of the post office, I would have to know more of the whole story. They may have valid reasons for their decision.

I think that the post office has the right to decide who they hire.
Lenora's right, walking on the concrete all day is VERY hard on your ankles, maybe he couldn't do it for a long time. I think the post office is covering their butts so that in 6 months they're paying for stuff because he can't work.
