I was thinking that it might be just milk crusted on the inside of Sydney's lips, but it won't come off when I rub it. You know what pasty mouth looks like, well that's what this looks like. Is it possible that that's what it is or is it something else?? I've notices little white dots on the end of her tongue too.

Any ideas on what it could be???

Babies often get thrush on the inside of their mouths, could that be it?

AutumnGirl 06-28-2002 02:03 AM

Maybe? I asked my Mom and she said that if it was thrush, then her throat would be really sore and she'd be cranky. Is that true?

Roxanna30135 06-28-2002 02:07 AM

Kale had thrush and was never cranky or had a sore throat. Have you been on antibotics since your surgery???? If so, then I'd say it was thrush. Call the doctor .. they will probably give you a precription for Nystatin or something like that. Eat lots of yogurt and put the same medication that they give Sydney on your nipples too!! Tell them you are nursing and they may even give you some medication!

AutumnGirl 06-28-2002 02:10 AM

I wasn't on any antibiotics after my surgery, the only thing I took was some Ibuprofen and one tylenol #3.

I think I will call the Dr., but I can't eat any yogurt, dairy upsets her. What causes thrush? Is there anything else it might be?? I'd just like to go to the Dr. prepared.

That is what it sounds like to me.

thrush - a yeast infection in the mouth and throat of babies.

This is from Baby U
Thrush: Taming the Yeast Beast
Thrush” is a yeast infection commonly found in the mouths of both bottle and breastfed infants. It can be present without any symptoms at all, and symptoms can be present in an infant’s mouth and not the mother’s breasts, and vice versa.

sounds like thrush to me too.

AutumnGirl 06-28-2002 02:14 AM

Is there anything I would be eating or drinking that would cause that?? I have no idea what would cause a yeast infection in babies?

Lady Knight 06-28-2002 02:16 AM

Thrush is a normal bacteria present in the body (I think it is called Candida but don't quote me), when it becomes *thrush* it is bc it has multiplied to fast.

As a diabetic I was intimately acquanited with it for years and years I know it grows much faster in a sugery enviroment and warmth helps too. I do not think it is a serious problem but it can be down right annoying at times.

Roxanna30135 06-28-2002 02:19 AM

Dairy upsets Kale too .. but yogurt doesn't?!?! Is Sydney eating solids yet?? If so, try to give her a little yogurt. I'm not sure what else causes it .... but it is very common. Apparently the body has yeast in it and when the normal amount gets off balance for one reason or another .. BAM .. you get a yeast infection or thrush!!

AutumnGirl 06-28-2002 02:25 AM

Yuck! We'll try the yogurt thing and I'll also call the Dr. Are antibiotics the only thing that will cure it or will it go away on it's own?

Roxanna30135 06-28-2002 02:31 AM

It gets worse without medication .. usually. I've never heard of it just going away. Warning .. it usually gets worse FAST. It can become quite painful and irritating too!!

Sorry .. hope it is gone soon!

AutumnGirl 06-28-2002 02:36 AM

Thanks Roxanna! I've been wondering what it was all week, it just kind of looks pasties on the inside of her lips, but nowhere else. Now that I have an idea, I'll see what the Dr. has to say.

Liz&NicksMom 06-28-2002 07:18 AM

Liz was never really cranky when she got thrush...but you should take her in to get checked...since you are bfing you dont' want her to pass it on to you, it could make you both miserable

Liz had some liquid stuff that we had to swab inside her mouth for about a week....and you may need some cream for you just to make sure

AutumnGirl 06-28-2002 11:28 AM

You mean I could get it?? On the inside of my mouth too or a regular yeast infection? Oh yah, that's the last thing I need!

Lady Knight 06-28-2002 11:33 AM

I think you would get it on your nipples wouldn't you, transfered from her mouth, sounds dang uncomfortable to say the least.

AnnieQ 06-28-2002 10:31 PM

Yes Leah that is where you would get it is on your nipple.

Meagan 06-30-2002 01:02 AM

Yep you would get it on your nipples and they would be sore as well. Maddie had thrush and I was not on antibiotics nor did I have a vaginal birth. It just appeared out of no where. Her mouth will be really sore. Maddie looked like she had a mouth full of cottage cheese before I got her to the doctor.. I thought it was just the milk coating new born babies get! They gave me Nystatin for Maddie and had me put lotrimen on my nipples between feedings. Hey let us know how she is!

arushing 06-30-2002 01:44 AM

It sounds like thrush to me. My dd has had it several times. She wasn't cranky or never acted like she had a sore throat. I would call your doctor and if they suspect thrush, they will probably call in Nystatin (sp) or something to that effect.
