Home Grown Vegetables
By Jill Black

Nothing quite compares to the taste of freshly picked vegetables grown right in your own backyard and the average backyard can produce enough vegetables to feed the family.

Short on space? Not a problem. Vegetables will grow quite hapily amongst your flowers or in containers on a patio or decking.

The secret to growing a bountiful crop comes down to good soil preparation. Just a our bodies need the right nutrients to keep us healthy so do our vegetables enjoy a good balance of nutirents to keep them healthy and growing strong.

The first step is to prepare your garden by turning the soil over and applying liberal quanities of compost and if required some general garden fertilizer formulated for vegetables to provide the right growing medium for what you are about to plant.

Your choice of plants depends on your families preference. I like to grow peas and beans as they can become quite expensive in the shops at certain times of the year and let's face it, somehow they just don't taste the same as freshly picked produce straight from the garden.

Do you like strawberries? These can be grown in raised beds with a little straw surrounding the plants to prevent rotting due to contact with the soil or happily grown in strawberry containers that look great as the rippened fruits cascade down the sides of the pot.

Perhaps your preference is in growing more ornamental, but useful plants, like chilies or peppers to add flavor and color.

Whatever you grow, nothing quite beats the pleasure of wandering out into the yard and picking produce you have grown and turning into a dish for the whole family to enjoy.

If you have never grown vegetables you will find it a pleasant and relaxing way to get outdoors and unwind at the end of the day as you tend your vegetables and watch them grow. So get outside and give it a go!
