October's Flower of the month is Coneflower
This pretty yellow coneflower is an excellent choice for flower arrangements, centrepieces and is ideal for adding colour to a fall garden.

CONEFLOWER (Rudbeckia)

The rudbeckia genus brings us annuals, biennials and perennials. Often bursting with colours of yellow and orange, it's also found in purple and white. While there are many different types of rudbeckia to choose from, the pretty yellow coneflower, a perennial, is an excellent choice for flower arrangements and centrepieces.

Features:
The coneflower, which resembles a daisy with bright petals surrounding a dark centre, is available in many forms. The fulgida, or Black-eyed Susan, and the Goldsturm varieties remain rather low to the ground while the lacinata can grow up to an impressive 8 feet in height.

Planting Time:
Divide the plants in spring or fall and sow new seeds in March.

Flowering Time:
Coneflowers can bloom as early as July and usually maintain their brilliant colours right through to October, this makes them an excellent choice if you're looking to add colour to a fall garden.

Growing Conditions:
Avoid shady areas when planting this perennial. Instead, choose bright, sunny areas and keep the soil damp. Do not use dry soil. Use well-rotted manure. Beware of slugs as they can affect the health of the coneflower.

After Flowering:
Cut the coneflower to the ground but try leaving a few stems sticking out for an interesting landscaping effect when winter hits.

Climate Zone: Hardy to 0°F, zone 6-7
