THROW AWAY YOUR TOOTHBRUSH?

We know that if we stay healthy, we save money by not having
to make extra trips to the doctor's office, buying medicine,
or missing work, right? Well, a way to stay a bit healthier
is to throw away that old toothbrush!

A spokesman for the Academy of General Dentistry points out
that: Toothbrushes can harbor germs that cause colds, flu,
and even gum disease. To help keep from getting sick over
your toothbrush, rinse it under running water for at least 15
seconds after each use, shake off the water, and store it
upright. If your bathroom has a "community" toothbrush holder,
then use a toothbrush cover. If you catch a cold, discard
that old toothbrush ASAP! Continuing to use your old brush
can extend the length of your illness, and you certainly don't
want that. The cost of a new brush is certainly far less than
a visit to the doctor's office!

Here is thrifty way of using the toothbrush if you still think it has life.
You can hang onto that old brush and use it
to clean small or hard to get places around the
house - like tile grout and corners!

I need to do this more often. I am super guilty of not getting a new toothbrush regularly.

Im guilty of it to Meagan, If we are low on money I seem to always find a better place for that money to go and I put it off until my toothbrush is begging me to set it free

Great point, Annie!! Getting a new toothbrush after being VERY sick is a great thing to consider!

I get a new one every 6 months when I get my cleaning. I buy a new one in between times... which allows me to have a new toothbrush every 3 months.... which is usually sufficient, from what my orthodontist says. When I get my braces on, I will minimally need to get a new one every other month b/c the braces just trash the brush.

A tip for those(like me) who use your toothbrushes too long. Dip your tooth brush in mouthwash(listerine and germ killing ones are best) once a week for 30 seconds and you will kill a lot of germs. I never think about my toothbrush unless it's really worn out, so I dip mine , as well as the kids,in the mouthwash regularly. If any of us are sick I soak it over night.

I change mine about once every three months. If I can't get a new one after being sick, I rinse mine in peroxide then again in water.

I never even thought to get a new one when we have a cold. Makes sense, though. I usually only get rid of mine when I go to the dentist and get a new one - every six months. For Alexander, he's had three in less than a year because he likes to chew on them when he brushes. I'll have to remember this and start getting better. Thanks for the info, Annie!!
