Wendy Our wedding was like that too. We had 4 months to plan or I guess I should say I had 4 months to plan because DH is in the Navy and was clear across the country. I picked out everything and I think I did a great job. I even picked out their tuxes and even got the ones he wanted. I had to talk to all the groomesmen and they helped me with guy things.
I am not ashamed at all to say my dress came off the sales rack at the bridal shop. $250.00. She had it so long that she just wanted rid of it. I made her change everything on it. Took off sleeves, and bows. We did so many things that the dress looked so different. She said if she would have known it could look like that she would have made the price higher.
My most expensive things were the silk flowers I had made at the flower shop. They were almost $300.00. But we did spend that much. My mom bought the veil which was 170.00 almost as expensive as the dress.

Dawn and I have our wedding pics on here somewhere feel free to add to that thread or start your own wedding photos thread in the beautiful babies section. I am sure we would love to see them

Spaggie Just had another thought or two.

CAKE: My husband (who used to be a pastry chef) and my sister made and decorated both of our cakes. The cost, including the decorations and top, was less than $30.

BOUQUET: Make a throw away bouquet. It doesn't have to be fancy. Mine was nothing like my bouquet, but had all of the wedding colors in it (navy blue and butter yellow with cream).

FLOWER GIRL: We took a small basket that I picked up at Garden Ridge (craft place) that is flat on one side so you can hang it on a wall. We spray painted it white and attached blue and yellow ribbons to it. Because it was flat, it hung easily when my neice was standing. We filled it with leftover flowers and greenery from all of the bouquets, so it matched everything. (She didn't actually take anything out of it.) Now, I have it hanging on my wall as a decoration and a reminder of our wedding day!

INVITATIONS: After pricing them, I knew we couldn't afford to have them printed. So I printed all of our invitations myself. Check out office supply stores and any stationeries in your area. I found beautiful wedding stationary marked 75% off. I was able to buy enough to send out 100 invitations, with matching envelopes, for less than $25 (not including postage). You could even find blank business cards in your wedding colors that you could print and insert as R.S.V.P. cards. Your computer should have several different fonts you could use. I used Script.

REHEARSAL DINNER: We had a B-B-Q, but since you are doing that for the wedding maybe you could have a picnic or a brunch. Either of those would be inexpensive and your friends and family could help you out with the food. And you wouldn't really need to decorate much or at all. Make it casual. I did and everyone enjoyed it.

PHOTOS: We couldn't afford a photographer, so we had my father take pictures. He has a really good 35mm with all the lens and stuff. Most of my friends and I had either been to weddings or stood in them ourselves, so we all knew what the traditional poses were. I also asked everyone to bring their cameras to take pictures during the reception and we had a few disposable cameras available for people to just pick up and snap pictures. Some of the best pictures I have are from my friends. One of my wedding gifts from a friend was that I could pick any three pictures I wanted and she took them, had them enlarged to whatever size I wanted and had them framed for me. All 3 cost her less than $20 and I treasure them. (2 5X7 and 1 8X10)

The notebook idea is great. I bought I regular college notebook with folders already in it so I would have some place to put all the slips of paper I seemed to collect. It cost less than $2 and after the wedding I was able to take everything and make put a scrapbook together. (Or I will if I ever find the time!)

Just a few more suggestions for your growing list of ideas! Congratulations again!

DH and I got married for around $1000.00, but we had alot of people help. My aunt made the cake, my uncle is a preacher, so forth and so on.

The one thing that REALLY helped me plan was I went out and bought a little (not the big ones and not the real little one, so maybe a middle size) three ring note book and filled it with blank pages. I took it EVERYWHERE, because everybody has a suggestion....write them all down. In that notebook (whick I still have three years later) I start by making a simple budget. EX. Gown $500.00 (I got mine for $450.00, which I'm not ashame to say I got it from a consement shop (second hand) It's beautiful.) Food-$ ----....you get the picture. Then I made a list of what I needed to do. Starting for me with finding a dress, finding a place.....

I had addresses in it, numbers....flower shops....rental places....compared prices.....kept recipts. It really came in handy. I think that should be the first thing...plus, you can keep it to remind yourself about the months you spent preparing.

Two notes~ I found the origianl owner of that dress....she paid $1500.00 on sale for it. AND we planned our whole wedding in four months.

Robyn Thanks, thats an Idea!

The main part of our reception is the hog roast as you've probably read, well my grandmother and aunt are paying for that as part of our gift which will run around $250

I'm still looking into makin my own decorations.. and my matron of honor is my best friend and she is letting my borrow some of her decorations.. like her mables and her candle holders and stuff.. so that will help A LOT!

Spaggie My wedding had to be the cheapest I have ever heard of, thanks to my friends. My parents flew my sister in a week early (I live in Houston, TX and she is in Amarillo in the panhandle, near OK). My best friend bought and paid for all of the decoration supplies and my sister made all of my bouquets and decorations for the church. We used the pew decorations for the tables at the reception. Two of my friends, who are wonderful cooks, made all of the food (we just had appetizer type food since the wedding was at 3 in the afternoon). The friend whose church I was married in paid for the church and minister as his gift to us. Several of our friends went in together and got us gift certificates for a Marriott hotel, which we used in San Antonio (2 hours from us). Including my dress and honeymoon, we personally spent less than $800.00 total, and my dress was just over $500.00!.

So try to see if people could help you out with the cost of the wedding as their gift to you. If it hadn't been for my friends and family, I wouldn't have had a wedding at all!

Robyn Oh Thank you! I found a book at B&N but they all seem to think everyone has a Wedding Budget of $20,000!!!! Its crazy!!! I think I may just keep looking!!!

about2be Hi, having just been married myself in 9/99, and being only 23, my dh and I tried to plan a wedding on a budget. There are some great books out there. "How to have a big wedding on a small budget" was my bible, but I just did a search on Barnes and Noble, and there were also like 25 other books dealing with the same topic. I found the books to be very helpful. In the 1 that I had, It evenn gave a list of numbers and stuff for stores, rental places and such. You should give it a try

Radmand Well, I am no help here, I got married in June, 9 months pregnant!!!
It was a surprise...for me!!! My husband planned it all and took me for a "romantic" weekend in Lake Tahoe. Well, when we arrived, there was my dress(maternity),shoes, flowers, etc.We went to a little chaple and were married that night. My BIL and SIL were there too. The only bad part, no family and friends, but it is simple and done, so now we will have to have a reception....

Robyn Wendy-- I never thought of that! Our little church would probably love to do it! Luckily my aunt used to have a farm and knows butchers.. so I'm getting my little hoggie for about half the price! ) And my grandmother and aunt are going to buy it.. WHEW!

Dawn-- I thought about that.. (oh i love lillies!!!) I don't want to go with a deep blood like maroon.. but kind of a dark rose red.. i'd love to see pictures!!!

What would I do without you girls????

Dawn I looked into renting a tent last summer (although I can't remember the size) and it seems like it ran around $100 - $150 (again, don't remember the time limit either).

We have a place called Hauser Rental around here that rents out the u-haul trucks and stuff. That would be the place to start.

I've also heard you can borrow them for free from the funeral home, but, ummmmm, well I wouldn't.

As for the flowers, how about ivory roses with maybe 2 of them being maroon? Or are you going with a really deep maroon? I had the most beautiful flowers in mine (my opinion, of course). They were lilies with maroon running through them. I've seen them in the craft stores, so I know you can get them as fake ones. I'll dig out a picture and upload it for you to see.

Wendy I think tent services are really expensive. If you have a local church that you visit, you could ask them because they may let you have it for free or charge you very little. We have always borrowed our big tent from our church...for parties...graduations because it is expensive to rent one. At least where we tried getting one it was expensive.

The chairs you could also try to get from your local church...firehall anything like that.

Robyn Well! I'm actually getting things done!!!!

I just got back from my parents house, spent 11 days there (man did I miss matt!!!! ) I found my hoggie LOL and I found a guy to roast my hoggie! My best friends sister is also interested in doing my flowers for my wedding.. I just have to come uip with the type of flowers... my colors are Navy.. Maroon.. & Ivory.. I was thinking about trying to find ivory roses and just having the girls have boquets of ivory roses and accent with maroon & navy ribbons...???? Because I don't want fake blue roses.. LOL I t hink it's tacky! LOL

I'm also trying to find a tent service place.. do any of you know about the cost of renting tents & chairs??? I'm afraid I'm going to get sticker shock! LOL

Robyn Thanks CAG! But luckily.. we're getting married i\on September 22! I am hoping that it will be a mild day! Normally herein Ohio my favorite weather is right around then.. very nice afternoons!! i'm just hoping it doesn't decide to turn arctic! LOL But thank you for the advice!!!

CAGmomof1 My wedding was catered by a dear friend of mine who gave us the WeddingCake for free! We had finger sandwiches! Punch Fruit to snack on and Vegtables to snack on! Please take this on to mind the Punch went real fast I got married on the Hottest Day of the Year in SC! I heard that night while my husband and I were stopped to get gas so we could go on our honeymoon that it was 105 degrees that day at the time our wedding was going on and at the time that our wedding party was bidding us all goodbye! So I highly reccomend that If your wedding is going to be taking place during the summer have plenty and I mean Plenty to drink! I hope this helps!

Aiyanna mom You know I had a standing wedding with few people sitting. So I didnt have to pay for many chairs. And it was outside on our property which saved more money. Now food was another thing I guess you will just have to shop around for good food at good prices.

Wendy That is a cool idea about tossing more than one bouqet of flowers. My problem was I even liked the one I tossed. I asked my mom if I really needed to toss flowers. My flowers set as my center piece on my dining room table.

Wendy.. yeah fake flowers definitely.. but I think for the boquet to toss.. I'm going to have several little boquets.. my best friend did that at her wedding in September and I thought it was cute, because nobody expected 5 girls to get them, just 1.. =o)

Wendy I also did fake flowers. I had mine made at a florist though. My flowers for the girls were silk single roses. Mine was a bouqet of roses. They were so pretty. I loved them and I was so happy that I did silk flowers. Especially in the middle of winter roses would have been so expensive to have a dozen in bouqet. Not that they are not expenisve any other time. I do recommend fake flowers but make sure you make a small bouqet to throw for all those single women.

Dawn This may be out of line, but since it's going to be an informal wedding anyway why not make it like a pot luck?

Since you guys have been together for awhile, I'm assuming you have most of what you need as far as toasters, towels, etc. (LOL) So why not ask your guests to bring a dish instead? That would eliminate you and your family doing all of the cooking.

I'm asking around about the flowers now -- I'm not very crafty myself, but perhaps one of my friends are! I do know that we ended up spending over $300 on flowers and I was going to preserve mine, but the stupid things rotted instead. So, good move using artifical flowers, IMO.

I'll let you know what i find out!

Robyn Ok.. we're doing the catering ourselves too!!! And a lot of people I know are pitching in with food too, the only thing we're buying is the hog, which i can geta t a good price pecause my aunt used to raise hogs so she can help me with that!

I'd like to do my own flowers.. i want to do fake flowers because I want my briesmaids to keep their bouquets.. and I toow ould like to keep mine. But the problem is.. I'm not sure how to do them.. Ilove crafty things like that so I"m sure I'd get the hang of it REAL quick.. but was wondering if you ladies had any clues????

Dawn OK ladies -- I want to see some of these wedding photos! Why doesn't someone start at thread over in the Beautiful Babies forum? That's the only one that allows photos right now. Show me yours and I'll show you mine. LOL

Wendy -- we did the quickie wedding also. It was the 3rd date we had set - but the military had other plans the first two times. So, when he got OK'd for leave, we planned the whole thing in about 2 weeks!

As for the honeymoon, we got one of those Bahamas packages. It was 3 days, 2 nights, oceanfront, airfare included. It was around $800 for both of us. You really can't beat that! Of course, we went in mid-July, which was their slow season. But we still had fun!

Wendy It is fun planning someone else's wedding I got married the day after Christmas. I did not have to many choices because my husband came home on leave. My dress was also around 300.00. The lady had put it on the bargain rack and I made her re-alter ther whole thing. We took of the ugly long sleeves, the big ugly bow in the back. We did a whole bunch of things to it and the lady said if she would have known it could have looked like that she would have kept it and sold it for more. With the wedding being the day after Christmas it emlimanted the problem of decorating the church because it was all ready decorated for Christmas.

Oh man, Dawn I love the dress uniform. I am not so fond of the Navy whites but I love their blues but that is their working uniform. I picked out my husband's tux for him which was a western theme.

My wedding was really cheap. My cake was homemade by someone who makes wedding cakes. It was the prettiest cake and it tasted so good. You may want to check around for something like that. My grandma catered the food herself. She is the best cook. I had an extremely nice wedding for very cheap.
The honeymoon also did not cost too much. We only went to Erie (Robyn you know where that is at) We did some shopping, ate at great restaurants and went to Niagara Falls a day. You could stay there but it costs so much more a night. They have the casino up there and other things that are nice to do.

I am going to have to say mine probably cost around the same as Dawn's

Robyn LOL We haven't set a budget, because of $$$$$$$$ or lack there of since we're a young family I'm not sure. But our, well my parents I know for sure are going to help. We luckily don't have to rent out a place for our reception, Matts parents have a 10 acre area of land.

My wedding dress though, I got brand new for $300!!!!! I'm sooo proud of myself!! it's abolutly beautiful!!! I saw it on E-bay, a woman that owns a bridal shop was auctioning it off! I was the high bidder, Then the last 5 minutes I got outbid by 5 bucks!! I was soooo upset!!! I called the woman and asked if she could tell me the style and model number so I could find one like it, she told me she'd let me have it for auction ending price!!! Which was $300, plus $10 for a dress bag!!! I talked to a couple bridal shops and asked what the style and size would sell for and most were between $1,100 and $1,700!!!!! I was SOOOOOOOO thrilled!!!

Now I can't wait to wear it!! I always try to bargain shop, and I can't do it very well, but this time, I sure did do a goo job!!!

Dawn Our entire wedding AND honeymoon was under $2000, so if you need any frugal advice, I'll be happy to offer it! I happen to be a bookkeeper, so I traded out bookkeeping services with a restaurant in return for catering. They tell me we had great food! I was too nervous to eat! LOL

Laura S Check around your area to see if you have any rental places available for chairs, table clothes etc. If you can't get chairs from a rental place check with your local arena, they usually rent out the chairs that are used for concerts, seminars the like. My cousin did an outside wedding last June and it was one of the best I've been to. So relaxing . Good luck.
